Bristol Airport passengers hit out at TUI after sandstorm disruption in Canary Islands

Bristol Airport passengers have hit out at TUI after a huge sandstorm caused flights to the Canary Islands to be disrupted.

Thousands of tourists had their travel plans disrupted as the cloud of sand shrouded the islands and left the skies of the archipelago a thick orange.

The regional government of the Canary Islands issued an alert during the weekend, advising residents to avoid travel unless necessary and to stay indoors.

The difficult conditions led to delays at Bristol Airport, with several TUI passengers voicing frustration at a lack of updates.

One frustrated passenger wrote on Twitter: "@TUIUK what is your plan for the passengers who have been sitting @BristolAirport for 9 hours waiting for a flight to #Tenerife?

"My in-laws have had zero information from you and have no idea what to do."

Another said: "Stuck in Bristol airport at the moment we would like to know where we are staying tonight."

A third person posted: " I have a friend in Bristol airport been stuck there 14 hours. No one is helping anyone."

TUI has since apologised for the disruption and added all flights to the Canary Islands will be operating as planned today (February 24).

A spokeswoman for the travel company said:  "We would like to sincerely apologise to our customers whose flights were disrupted by adverse and changeable weather conditions in the Canary Islands over the weekend.

"The safety of our customers and crew is always our highest priority and we’re working tirelessly to get everyone to their destination as quickly as possible.

"Following an improvement in the weather overnight, all flights scheduled to depart to the Canary Islands today will be operating as planned.

"We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank our customers for their co-operation and patience."

A spokeswoman for Bristol Airport added: "The airlines are providing the updates and are in close liaison with the destination airports as the sandstorm conditions improve."
