Bristol Airport only running 'essential flights' and helping stranded residents return to UK

Bristol Airport is helping in the fight to bring stranded residents back to the UK and is only running essential flights.

It's understood only two planes took off from Bristol today (Wednesday) as London City Airport announced it would close until the end of April.

Meanwhile, 'enhanced' cleaning is taking place at Bristol Airport every day while it remains open.

Around one million British citizens - including two Bristol teenagers - are currently either on holiday or on a business trip abroad.

The Foreign Office has now warned travellers may not be able to get commercial flights within days.

And people have been urged to make urgent plans to return to the UK this week.

"Bristol Airport is operational to assist with repatriation of customers returning home and other essential flights" said a spokesperson.

"We continue to work closely with airlines, the government, Department for Transport and Public Health England on the latest information and guidance for customers travelling through Bristol Airport.

"Safety and security of our customers and staff is our key priority at all times and enhanced cleaning procedures and self-distancing policies are in place to keep our customers and colleagues safe, whilst providing these vital air links."

Last Tuesday, chiefs at Gatwick Airport announced 200 jobs were being lost in order to "protect the business" against the impact of coronavirus.

Bosses at the airport will also take a 20 per cent salary cut and waive any bonuses.
