Bristol Airport could appeal North Somerset Council decision to reject expansion

Bristol Airport's CEO has said the transport hub is considering its options after it was denied permission to expand.

North Somerset Council officers voted to reject the expansion at a meeting at Weston-super-Mare Town Hall last night (February 10).

Councillors said the environmental and societal impacts outweighed the economic benefits of the expansion.

Bristol Airport chief executive Dave Lees said the decision risks "putting the brakes" on future growth of the region when other regions and areas are forging ahead.

Speaking on Emma Britton's BBC Radio Bristol breakfast show this morning, Dave Lees, said the airport has not ruled out appealing the decision .

He said: "There are potential options for us. I will not be discounting an appeal.

"We're still yet to see the full grounds of the rejection, the rejection will need to be ratified. The actual grounds for the ratification aren't clear yet, we're in this period where we're awaiting what these grounds are, that will inform our next steps."

Mr Lees also said the decision not to expand the airport won't help the environment in the long-term.

He argued people who live in Bristol will instead drive to other airports in the UK such as Heathrow and Gatwick and this will just add to extra car pollution.
