Bristol Airport advice ahead of Extinction Rebellion protest near A38

Bristol Airport has issued advice to drivers and flyers ahead of a protest which is due to take place today (August 29).

Extinction Rebellion said it would be holding a "protest spectacle" at 6pm this evening to catch the rush hour.

Not happy with the transport hub's expansion plans, the group will meet with local campaigners at at Felton Village Hall, the nearest community to the airport.

The airport said the action would be taking place on a footpath next to the A38, although the protesters have kept details of the action under wraps - including whether they intend to disrupt traffic.

Bristol Airport has ambitious expansion plans which will increase its capacity to 12 million passengers every year.

But Extinction Rebellion campaigners said the climate crisis means the airport cannot expand, and said it would further damage the environment if it gets the go ahead.

The group is also planning a protest the following day in central Bristol.

A spokesperson for the airport said: "A peaceful protest by a group of individuals on the footpath adjacent to the A38 by Bristol Airport is planned from 18.00h until 21.00h this evening.

"Drivers are advised to be aware more pedestrians than normal may be in the area.  Passengers are advised that all flights to and from Bristol Airport are operating as normal."

The council and airport have also issued statements ahead of tomorrow's protest.
