Police have shot a man at Brisbane airport after he allegedly pulled out a knife and made a bomb threat.

The man is said to have walked into the airport carrying a box with wires protruding from it which he said was a bomb, according to reports in Australia.

The suspect was shot and subdued with non-lethal rounds, according to reports.

A witness described the individual as an “old man.” and said he also pulled a knife from a bag near the airport's food court.

The airport was evacuated.

Queensland police said: "Police have made a declaration under the Public Safety and Preservation Act tonight at Brisbane Airport due an emergency situation.

"The International Airport has been evacuated and trains have currently been stopped."

Police later said they had taken one suspect into custody.

"Specialist police have taken a man into custody," they said in a statement.

"Police are currently conducting clearance searches of the International Terminal. No reported injuries to any members of the public or police. PSPA -emergency declaration remains in place."

"A man has been transported to a police station where he is to be interviewed. Specialist police remain at the airport with clearance searches of the International Terminal on-going. The public are thanked for their on-going co-operation and patience."
