Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has caused a stir among Arsenal supporters on social media after his goal for France in the 7-1 win over Ukraine.
The 17-year-old midfielder had already made his international debut last month in the 4-2 win against Croatia in the Nations League, when he came off the bench for Chelsea's N'Golo Kante.
But Didier Deschamps handed the highly-rated teenager his first start against Ukraine on Wednesday night, and the Rennes starlet repaid his manager by scoring an audacious overhead kick after 10 minutes.
According to Opta, the goal meant Camavinga became France’s second youngest player ever to score for the country, at 17 years and 11 months.
Off the pitch, Camavinga has previously been linked with Arsenal after his breakout season in France in 2019.
Rennes faced the Gunners in the 2018/19 Europa League round of 16, with the Gunners winning 4-3 on aggregate after overturning a first-leg deficit.
Camavinga was not involved in either tie, but the magnitude of his club facing the north Londoners in a knock-out European tie was not lost upon him.
With all games in France suspended at the time due to the global coronavirus outbreak, Camavinga took the opportunity to upload a picture on Twitter of himself in March spending time with his family.
The image showed the 17-year-old sitting in his bedroom playing video games with his brothers, with the caption: 'Enjoy the good times and take care of your families!
'My brother is still young to play fifa. Smiling face with open mouth and cold sweat we know the technique.'
But Arsenal supporters noticed a poster on the wall, which commemorated Rennes' clash with the Gunners last year.
And after Camavinga's goal against Ukraine on Wednesday night, fans took the chance to revisit the picture.
One fan tweeted : "Bring him home!" Another wrote : "Eduardo Camavinga's room. Look at the picture on the wall...it had to be @Arsenal."
A third posted : "Turns out Camavinga is an Arsenal fan? Time to hijack Madrid's bid in January."
Rennes manager Julien Stephan outlined the youngster's strengths and weaknesses.
"In the recovery of the ball, he is very good," Stephan previously said, as per Ouest-France. "He is able to spring in the feet of the opponent. He has a good volume of play.
"He also has legs to project himself, a rather interesting technical quality, even if he can still improve his long game. Its striking quality, too, can be improved.
"And then his right foot must be worked, it's a left almost exclusive for the moment.
"But he already has a lot of qualities and it makes sense that at 16, it is not a finished product."
