Brilliant mural paying tribute to Roddy Doyle classic 'The Van' unveiled in Kilbarrack

A brilliant mural paying tribute to the Roddy Doyle classic "The Van" has been unveiled in Kilbarrack.

A signal box has been transformed into a celebration of the film, which is about two friends who decide to purchase a chipper van after getting into financial difficulty.

It's part of the Barrytown trilogy centred on the Rabbittes, a working-class family from fictional Barrytown on Dublin's northside.

Signal boxes around the capital are currently being painted as part of Dublin City Council's The Canvas Project, where artists can apply with their ideas.

The artist behind "The Van" tribute, Stephen Douglas, said that when the Council said they wanted the signal boxes kept in theme with the local area, he decided to base his idea on Kilbarrack native Doyle.

"The Van" was the final book of the Barrytown Trilogy, following "The Commitments" and "The Snapper" (Dublin City Council)

Speaking on The Good, The Bad, The Ugly podcast, Douglas said: "I picked "The Van" specifically.

"It's about a fella down on his luck and he decides to get a van and sell fish and chips out of it. Because the van is a metal structure and I'm painting a metal structure , and it's to do with Roddy Doyle that's where that came in."

"The Van" is about two men who are laid off from their jobs and decide to purchase a chipper van (Dublin City Council)

Stephen himself is a Dublin Bus driver who is an amateur artist for his own enjoyment.
