'Brilliant' man took own life after believing mum of his unborn baby was dead

Tributes have been paid to a "brilliant" man who took his own life after believing the mother of his children had died.

Bradley Crellin, 31, died on Friday, April 9, not knowing he had actually saved the life of fiancée, Becci McDonald, who is currently pregnant with his unborn baby.

Becci, 28, shares another child with Bradley, and says her daughter from a previous relationship saw him as her stepfather.

She approached the ECHO to pay tribute to Bradley, who built a happy home with her after years on the streets, and to provide a lasting memorial for their children.

She says she believes Bradley thought she had died after she was rushed to hospital after she attempted to take her own life on April 8.

Becci, who is originally from Bootle but now lives near the city centre, told the ECHO: "Our son is seven months old, I have been suffering with extreme postnatal depression and some psychosis.

"Everything was too much.

"But Bradley saved my life. He called the ambulance.

"The last thing he saw was me out of consciousness, blue-lighted to hospital. He didn't realise I was going to be okay."

When Becci met Bradley around eighteen months ago, he was living on the streets.

She continued: "I got chatting to him, I often would speak to people who didn't have a home.

"He had been homeless on and off for around seven years, he had a really traumatic childhood, he'd been in and out of care.

"We went on a date and I took him in not long after. My daughter adored him.

"People might not think we were together that long but we were joined at the hip, we were best friends."

Due to the time he spent living on the streets, Bradley was well-known within the Whitechapel Centre and its community, who have paid tribute to him.

A spokeswoman for the centre said: "We were very sad to hear about Bradley’s death.

"We supported him over a number of years and he was well-known and well-liked by staff, volunteers and other members of the homeless community.

"We last saw Bradley more than a year ago as he was settled with Becci but he will be remembered as a polite and helpful young man, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends, RIP Bradley."

Becci says she is now more stable and is getting support, all while carrying a baby and preparing for Bradley's funeral.

This week, she attended her twelve-week scan which showed the baby is fit and healthy.

Bradley's funeral will take place on Thursday, April 29. Due to coronavirus restrictions, only a limited number of people can attend, however it will be broadcast over video stream for others who wish to pay their respects.

Becci has asked anybody wanting to send flowers or money to make a donation to the Whitechapel Centre who "played a huge part in his life".
