Brilliant footage shows incredibly rare albino squirrel playing in Edinburgh snow

Gorgeous footage has emerged of an incredibly rare albino squirrel playing in the Edinburgh snow.

Local man Steven Groat captured a short but brilliant clip of the little creature – one of the city's most elusive residents – running around a small wooded area near Slateford Green before the snow thawed at the weekend. This comes just over a year after another sighting of the super-cute squirrel at the nearby Saughton Park hit the headlines.

Steven shared news of his remarkable encounter near Hutchison Crossway on social media.

The albino squirrel is said to be so rare that your chances of spotting one are just one in 100,000. Reports suggest there could be as few as 50 living in the UK.

The condition is caused by an absence of melanin which affects the colour of their fur and eyes, and this is believed to affect around one in a million grey squirrels.

Last year one of the gorgeous squirrels was caught on camera visiting a house in West Lothian.

The little creature, with its white fur and red eyes, is a regular in Stuart Henry's back garden, and can be seen poking its nose in and around a bird feeder from time to time.

Have you been lucky enough to see one of these albino squirrels in Edinburgh and the Lothians? We'd love to see your photos if so. Feel free to email us on news@edinburghlive.co.uk.
