While Bristol City fans were celebrating the arrival of defender Rob Atkinson, Oxford United supporters were quick to send a message to the Robins.
That message being Nigel Pearson has lured a top-class defender to Ashton Gate.
City announced the deal for Atkinson, who has penned a three-year contract with the option of a fourth included, on Saturday afternoon – with Oxford receiving an undisclosed fee understood to be in the region of £1.6million.
“I’m excited and looking forward to playing in the Championship," Atkinson said.
"It’s another step up and I’ve done plenty of those in my career. I’ll be attacking it the same as I always have - that’s head on, working hard and hopefully it will go just as well as my previous step-ups.”
The 22-year-old's arrival in BS3 is not only a coup for Pearson and the Robins, who fended off interest from Celtic to land the defender, but it also satisfies one of the manager's primary aims in this transfer window: to fortify the centre of defence.
After the surprise return of Nathan Baker last week, Atkinson's signing leaves City's defensive ranks looking an awful lot healthier, with club captain Tomas Kalas and Taylor Moore among the centre-backs also on the books.
