All major parties are running candidates including Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail, Green Pary, Labour, Social Democrats and People Before Profit.

We will be profiling all candidates so you get to know them a bit better ahead of polling day.

Who is Dublin Bay South candidate Brigid Purcell

Brigid Purcell is a People Before Profit candidate in the upcoming by-election for Dublin Bay South.

She is a feminist and stresses the fact that she is a “normal person”.

What job has Brigid Purcell and where did she go to college?

The hopeful candidate has worked in the service industry for nearly a decade. She worked as a waitress, bartender, cleaner, kitchen porter and cashier.

She believes that she has seen first-hand the lack of protection offered to workers in this country.

The People Before Profit member was recently in the public eye when she protested against the closing of Portobello Plaza.

Purcell is now working in animation. She graduated from Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology in 2018.

What are Brigid Purcell’s key priorities?

The young woman is campaigning for better standards for workers including a €15 an hour minimum wage and for the pension age to go back to 65.

She is calling for a legal right to sick pay and a pension, as well as mandatory overtime rates.

Purcell would like to push for publicly funded childcare, rent controls and for public land to be used to build affordable housing.

She believes serious investment is needed to solve the pollution in Dublin Bay. The politician is also calling for Dublin city to become more user friendly with cheaper bus fares, more WiFi spots and water drinking fountains.
