Arsenal moved into the top four, temporarily at least ahead of Chelsea's game at Watford, with a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Boxing Day.
But Unai Emery's men are now only six points clear of Manchester United after the Red Devils' victory at home to Huddersfield Town.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's opener was cancelled out by Jurgen Locadia's equaliser for Brighton at the Amex, with Stephan Lichtsteiner's defensive mistake costing the Gunners on the south coast.
The Swiss defender attempted to head a long ball back to Leno but succeeded only in finding Locadia, who took the ball past Bernd Leno and tapped into an empty net.
