Brighton striker Danny Welbeck makes penalty admission after Liverpool VAR controversy

Brighton and Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck has defended the decision to award a controversial penalty at the death against Liverpool.

In a game packed with VAR incidents, the Reds led 1-0 through Diogo Jota's second-half goal before Andy Robertson caught Welbeck in the box.

The contact was marginal but proved to be enough for VAR officials to send referee Stuart Attwell over to the pitch-side monitor and he immediately gave a penalty that was dispatched by Pascal Gross.

It was the third VAR incident that punished Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane also seeing goals ruled out for offside - with Salah's in particular proving a marginal call.

Speaking to BT Sport post-match, Welbeck admitted that, in today's game, whilst the penalty was soft, it was the correct decision.

"It’s one of them games, you’ve gotta try to stick in it right until the end and we knew could create some opportunities and explot their back line. In the end, we got a soft penalty, but it’s one we’ll take.

"In today’s game, with the VAR, I’ve touched the ball before him to try and get round him, but he’s kicked me then kicked the ball. The referee has been over to the screen and he’s made the decision."

He added: "The gaffer said we would rather go down fighting. Going into this game we knew we could cause problems.

"They have so much firepower but we wanted some firepower of our own. We could have gone ahead in the game but these things happen.

"They could have gone further ahead with the VAR and offside rules. There's no benefit of doubt in today's game but it's 1-1 and that's how it's ended."
