Brighton: Woman arrested on suspicion of murder after man, 50, dies in flat fire

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead after a fire in a house in Brighton in the early hours of Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Preston Road at around 4am and confirmed that a 50-year-old man was dead at the scene.

Sussex Police said a 36-year-old woman from Brighton had been arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue sent in teams from five stations to deal with the blaze in the basement flat of a three storey building.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and a spokesperson commented that it was extinguished before 9am.

A statement added: "Crews from Preston Circus, Roedean, Newhaven, Bexhill, Lewes, supported by crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service used breathing apparatus, an electric saw and forceable entry to access the property.

"Pumping equipment and firefighting foam was used to deal with the fire."

Sussex Police is also investigating and has asked anyone with information to come forward.

A road closure was in place on Sunday from Preston Road, from Ditchling Rise to the junction of Stanford Avenue.
