Brighton & Hove Albion set to tie up £6m deal for defender linked to Bristol City and Leeds United

Brighton & Hove Albion look set to seal a deal for Portsmouth star Matt Clarke.

The defender has previously been linked with both Bristol City and Leeds United, but Brighton's Premier League status has left the Championship duo unable to match their spending power.

Team Talk report that the deal is all part of a centre-back merry-go-round in the Premier League, which will see Seagulls star Lewis Dunk make the move to Leicester City for £30m.

The Foxes, in turn, look set to sell Harry Maguire for £85m should any club meet their asking price.

It is the sort of money that the Robins and Leeds are unable to compete with, meaning Brighton are free to sign 22-year-old Clarke from Portsmouth.

Bristol City are on the lookout for a centre-back, having yet to tie up a deal for Chelsea's Tomas Kalas, and have also been linked with Jordan Willis, who is available on a free transfer.

Stoke City were also said to be keen on Clarke, but moved on to other targets when it became clear that Pompey were hopeful of a sizable fee.
