Brighton forward Aaron Connolly insists he was fouled by Michael Keane as Everton VAR controversy continues

Brighton and Hove Albion forward Aaron Connolly insists he was fouled by Michael Keane as Saturday's VAR controversy at the Amex Stadium continues.

Everton were leading 2-1 courtesy of goals from Richarlison and substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin when Connolly went down in the area under pressure from Keane.

Despite referee Andy Madley not initially awarding a foul, VAR overturned the decision and the hosts went on to win the game 3-2.

“I would say it was a penalty," Connolly told the Brighton and Hove Independent . "[Keane] has come right down on my foot, whether or not he is looking I think it is penalty personally. VAR obviously thought that as well, so we have got the penalty.

"If he doesn’t come down on me I get onto the ball at least, so he has taken that chance, so it is a penalty.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter refused to comment on the incident, adding: "It was an important moment to get the equaliser and there was a feeling in stadium for us to push on and get the win.

"I haven't seen replays of the penalty. We have had a few that have not gone our way recently. We have earned a bit of luck. We didn't play our best and it was a tough match. We had to dig deep."
