An elderly Brighton supporter died after being taken ill ahead of their Premier League game on Saturday.

The fan, who attended the match against Wolves with his son, received treatment from medical staff at the Amex Stadium.

He was rushed by ambulance before kick-off to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber told the club's website: "This is very sad news and the thoughts and prayers of all of us at the club are with the gentleman's family and friends at this time."

Seagulls won the game 1-0 after Glenn Murray scored his 100th goal for the club.

The Brighton supporter's death came hours after 61-year-old Glenn Hoddle collapsed after suffering a heart attack while working at BT Sport studios in the morning.

He remained in a serious condition throughout the day but is now "responding well" to treatment in hospital.

Six hours after the news broke of Mr Hoddle's collapse, a helicopter carrying Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha crashed in flames outside the King Power Stadium.

Mr Srivaddhanaprabha was on board with his daughter and three others when the helicopter spiralled out of control.

The tragedy has been described as the "darkest day" in the club's history.
