Brighton chairman issues verdict on Premier League relegation battle and Liverpool's title claim

Brighton and Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom has warned that the Premier League must scrap any plans to relegate teams on a points per game basis - but also claimed that Liverpool should be given the league title.

With lockdown in the UK currently set to continue until at least May 7, early June could be the perfect time to resume football behind closed doors.

However, should lockdown be extended further and into the summer, the Premier League will have to begin to consider other plans to end the season.

Some have called for a point per game system to be introduced which will calculate the points that each side are most likely to pick up, based off their recent results.

But Bloom has warned that the system could see teams relegated by as little as 0.2 points and thus losing a huge portion of their financial income by the smallest of margins.

"I don't foresee a situation, if the season's not played out, that teams will get relegated on a points-per-game basis," said Bloom as he spoke to the Telegraph .

"I just don't think it's fathomable that a team which is not allowed to play out the season may lose out on 0.2 of a point and also it does not take into account the strength of the teams you have not played.

"You may get a title winner – obviously Liverpool deserve it – you may use that criteria for European qualification, but I do not see how anyone can vote for that, certainly the [70] per cent needed, for teams to get relegated."

But the FA are still focussed fully on completing the season, Bloom explained: "When we are talking with the Premier League clubs and the Premier League itself, I think it's about finishing this season.

"If we get to a situation whereby it's decided that the season can't be concluded, then that's when we need to have serious conversations about what's going to happen for next season."
