Brighton boss gives honest verdict on penalty and VAR controversy against Liverpool

Brighton boss Graham Potter has expressed sympathy for Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool’s latest VAR controversy.

The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw after late drama in the Premier League on the South Coast on Saturday.

Pascal Gross converted a penalty in injury time for the Seagulls after Andy Robertson was adjudged to have caught Danny Welbeck.

Referee Stuart Attwell had given the spot kick after being advised to consult the pitchside monitor by VAR Kevin Friend having initially ignored the incident.

Liverpool had already seen two goals chalked off by VAR, most contentiously when Mohamed Salah was deemed offside by the narrowest of margins in the first half.

Klopp cut an unhappy figure after the final whistle and was deep in conversation with Attwell as the teams left the field.

And Brighton counterpart Potter said: “It wasn’t the most stonewall penalty I’ve seen, I would say.

“Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.

“It’s a beautiful part of football that we’ll always be debating referee’s decisions and linesman’s decisions.

“You need the margins to go your way in the Premier League and clearly they went our way today.

“At the same time, I thought our performance levels were really, really good and we deserved something from the game.

“As the clock was ticking I was concerned, but I knew we would keep pushing until the end.”

Potter added: “It’s not nice when it doesn’t go your way, I’m not going to lie.

“I’ve been on the receiving end myself when you are scratching your head a little bit.

“It’s always going to be there. Whether it’s VAR, referees or linesmen, it’s part of the game.

“It’s frustrating when it’s not your day and when it is, you have to be thankful.”
