Brighton 1 West Ham 1: Leandro Trossard's debut goal denies Hammers victory on the south coast

West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton at the Amex on another day when technology played its part in the Premier League.

Brighton were celebrating and West Ham were ready to kick-off when Leandro Trossard scored in the first half, but after a long delay the strike was ruled out by VAR for offside.

West Ham fans were signing “Oh Lord, VAR” and they were celebrating again when the Hammers went ahead through Javier Hernandez midway through an entertaining second half.

But Brighton equalised almost instantly through Trossard and after another VAR check, the goal stood.

Both sides had chances to win it late on and substitute Michail Antonio wasted a great chance at the death when he headed straight at Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

Both teams had to settle for a draw which means West Ham have one point from their opening two games after their 5-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening weekend.

Without injured duo Sebastian Haller and Felipe Anderson, Manuel Pellegrini made five changes from the side that lost last Saturday.

They could, and probably should, have gone behind in the opening minute when Dan Burn lost marker Issa Diop at a free-kick and headed over the crossbar from close range.

West Ham settled down after that early chance and had plenty of possession but without Haller they lacked a focal point in attack and struggled to create many chances as Javier Hernandez found it difficult against the towering trio of Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk and Burn.

Lukasz Fabianski saved long-range efforts from Dale Stephens and Solly March and West Ham needed VAR to come to their rescue on 27 minutes when Brighton thought they had scored.

New Brighton signing Trossard smashed home from a Burn cross and West Ham were ready to kick-off when the big screen showed there was a VAR review.

Replays showed Burn was offside from the initial ball into the box and the goal was ruled out.

It was a let-off for West Ham and the scores were level at half-time, with the visitors having failed to test Ryan and the home side probably edging the first 45 minutes.

Brighton picked up where they left off at the start of the first half and wasted a great chance to go ahead when Trossard fluffed his lines.

West Ham then went in front against the run of play on 61 minutes with their first shot on target.

Manuel Lanzini slipped a brilliant ball through to Hernandez, who produced a tidy finish in front of the travelling fans.

But Brighton were level four minutes later. Angelo Ogbonna and Diop failed to deal with a pass over the top and Trossard picked up the loose ball and fired past Fabianski into the far corner.

Brighton manager Graham Potter threw on £20million Neal Maupay and the former Brentford striker missed a great chance to put his side ahead when he blazed over from close range.

Both sides pushed for a winner and Antonio wanted a penalty when he tumbled over inside the area. Not given and no VAR review needed.

Fabianski then saved a Davy Propper header and West Ham went straight down the other end as Antonio saw a shot blocked.

A brilliant run from Lanzini led to Robert Snodgrass having a shot saved by Ryan and Fabianski then did well to keep out Maupay.

There was a late VAR check for a Brighton penalty after some jostling in the West Ham box and Antonio could have won it at the death but headed straight at Ryan.
