Brighter Bothwell group organises spring clean event

The Brighter Bothwell group held a second spring clean event over the Easter holidays in order to keep their community tidy.

Many volunteers left St Bride’s Primary School entrance to clean up the area and collect litter for environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, as part of the National Spring Clean Campaign.

The campaign urges everyone to take personal responsibility for their litter, encouraging them to “give your litter a lift, take it home”.

Scotmid Co-operative is supporting Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Spring Clean campaign this year, and Brighter Bothwell were pleased to have support from the Tannochside store.

They had the use of clean-up kits, and were also provided with refreshments for the volunteers and prizes for the most unusual objects found.

Marjory Robertson of Brighter Bothwell said: “We received very good support from South Lanarkshire Council, who also provided litter-picking equipment to help us kit out the large number of volunteers, and they uplifted all the litter collected.

“We were delighted with the volunteers participating on the day, many of whom were children and young people. Our local Beavers and Scouts were out in force to help us. It was good to see so many people keen to improve the quality of their local environment.

“Sincere thanks to them all. We appreciate their support.”

Recent monitoring by Keep Scotland Beautiful has revealed that over 82.8 per cent of Scotland’s main roads and iconic routes are affected by litter. With investment from industry and working in partnership with Transport Scotland, Zero Waste Scotland, VisitScotland, road operating companies and local authorities, the campaign hopes to see road users reduce the amount of litter thrown from vehicles.
