Brighten up! Why apple green is the colour of the season

Given our newly-established al fresco existences, it’s perhaps unsurprising that we’ll be borrowing from the shade range of Mother Nature’s wardrobe this spring.

More laid-back than lime, and punchier than pistachio, the takeaway from the spring/summer 2021 shows was that the colour order of the season is apple green, a hue so big and bright it’ll leave everyone clamouring for bite.

Said to represent wellbeing and harmony, brands predicted big things for the shade in their spring/summer 2021 collections. For Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta, who eschewed a virtual show in favour of a socially-distanced catwalk at Sadler’s Wells in December, ‘Bottega Green’ was proposed in the form of platform mules, bags and fringed dresses. The day after the brand’s show, Hailey Bieber posted to Instagram sporting two emerald pieces from the collection with the caption ‘me in green’ which received just shy of 1.5 million likes.

Molly Goddard also went goo-goo for green as she churned out apple-toned maxis, midis and even platform UGGs that came as part of her debut collaboration with the Californian footwear label, while Ganni injected fresh bursts of the hue into its detachable faux leather collars, shorts and bags.

It’s perhaps no surprise given the topsy-turvy state of affairs that designers are ushering through the shade. "Green is a generally much more calming colour which is why, when we feel stressed, we’re encouraged to surround ourselves with nature and to eat lots of green foods," says colour psychologist, Jules Standish.

The colour has also been known to encourage creativity in its wearer. In a 2012 study, researchers found that when people glanced at the colour green for two seconds before doing a creative task, it boosted their creative output compared to briefly looking at other colours, including white, grey, red, and blue.

For those ready to lean into green, the high street is awash with emerald options. Arket’s apple-toned Ice Crepe Scoop Neck Top will give you change from £40, while KITRI’s limited-edition Karoline dress comes in a meadow-fresh shade that promises to pep up even the most quotidian of Zooms. But this is no time for complication: if you’re reluctant to shed the sweats just yet, then look to Ganni, which has just released new green tones of its sell-out loungewear range, Softwares.
