
With Mother's Day approaching on May 10, bunches of carnations are brought in for quality checks in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, before being shipped. As one of the main production areas for the flower in Japan, the city boasts an annual production of about 24 million carnations, or about 10% of domestic market share. Around this time of year, about 1 million flowers are delivered to three workshops run by the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives' Nishimikawa branch. Due to the spread of the new coronavirus, the price of carnations has halved. A local JA official said, "I hope our flowers will brighten up the atmosphere even just inside homes."
