Bright idea at Newcastle's Eldon Square aims to start shoppers' day with a bang

Shoppers in Newcastle this weekend will find their day brightened up thanks to a new installation out to make them smile.

More than 80 balloon displays have been installed in intu Eldon Square with the sole purpose of cheering up its customers' day and they will be on show for the rest of the month.

As a further attraction, a balloon wall - in a change from a flower wall - has been set up at the entrance to the centre at Grey's Quarter so that shoppers can snap a selfie with a background of rainbow colours.

And those who share their images are in with a chance to win a £100 intu gift card as well as a balloon installation of their own, courtesy of Balloon-ilicious, the North East company which has created the installation.

The swathes of balloons - in colour coordinated rows - are suspended above the malls throughout Eldon Square.

And intu, which has picked mental health charity Tyneside and Northumberland Mind as its charity of the year, is hoping to raise a few smiles, saying use of colour and circular patterns are "contributing factors" to spreading joy.

General manager Phil Steele  said: “We’re delighted to showcase over 80 balloon installations - a first of its kind for North East shoppers on this scale.

"We believe it will prove to be a popular attraction for those visiting the centre this month - we can’t wait to see everyone’s selfie snaps!”

For a chance to win the selfie competition city centre shoppers must tag @intueldonsquare in their snaps on social media.
