Bright idea: An outlet cover that doubles as a night light

Jan. 18--These days people are so reliant on personal electronic devices that need routine charging -- smartphones, tablets, laptops and the like -- that home power outlets quickly become crowded, and there's little room left for other essentials. The result is a lot of unplugging of everyday items -- like, for example, night lights. Suddenly it's 3 a.m. and you can't find the bathroom, and/or your kid's nyctophobia has flared up. Again.

What if outlet cover plates doubled as night lights, thus freeing up prime real estate? That's the idea behind the SnapRays Guidelight, a sleek little product that recently came on our radar. Created by SnapPower -- a Utah-based startup that invents lots of "Oh, duh!" solutions for powering lights and electronics -- the Guidelight is a replacement outlet cover with built-in LED night lights and a sensor that automatically turns them on/off based on how dark it is. It's one of those products that make so much sense we can't believe it's not already a household standard.

Furthermore, installation appears to be, well, a snap: Instead of needing batteries or having to do any rewiring, you just unscrew the old cover plate and screw in the Guidelight, which draws power through prongs. According to SnapPower, the LEDs only use about 10 cents of power per year and will shine on for 25-plus years.

While a bright idea, the Guidelight doesn't work with every outlet. Standard Duplex and Decor outlets are fine, but it's not compatible with GFCI outlets (which can be identified by the test and reset buttons between the plugs). Also, be aware that on horizontal-facing outlets, the LEDs will shine sideways, not down. A single Guidelight is currently priced at $15, but they're also available in packs. A powerful invention, indeed.
