BRIEF: Yankees' Michael Pineda strikes out 16 in win over Orioles

May 10--New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda put on a memorable performance during Sunday's 6-2 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Pineda struck out a career-best 16 batters over seven innings, becoming only the fourth pitcher in Yankees history to achieve the feat. He struck out the side in the second and fifth innings and recorded at least two strikeouts in each of the innings he pitched. Pineda threw 81 strikes on 111 total pitches.

The 16-strikeout, single-game total ties him with David Cone and David Wells for second-most in Yankees history. Ron Guidry notched 18 strikeouts during a game for the Yankees in 1978.

Pineda's performance also led to some dubious marks for the Orioles. The 16 strikeouts were the most the Orioles have had against a single pitcher over seven innings. In addition, the Orioles struck out 18 times in the game, the most ever by the franchise over nine innings.

Pineda improved to 5-0 and has 54 strikeouts through 46 1/3 innings this season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
