Jan. 21--A 20-year-old woman was working on her laptop on her bed Monday afternoon when a reflection from her ceiling caught her eye.
She noticed that a ceiling vent was slightly ajar.
When a friend arrived at the Wrigleyville neighborhood apartment, the two took a closer look at the vent and made a startling discovery: a video camera pointed toward the bed, according to a Chicago police report.
When police arrived about 6:10 p.m. at the residence in the 1100 block of West Eddy Street, they found a "small covert device" connected to numerous wires, according to the report.
Officers later discovered a long coaxial cable extending from the bedroom, through an exterior wall and then routed to the basement.
Police were not able to check out the basement Monday because of a locked door but learned it was used as a storage area, not a residence, police said. An evidence technician was called to the scene, according to the report.
Area North detectives, armed with a search warrant, returned on Tuesday and reportedly spent hours at the location gathering evidence.
In a 911 call to police, the victim said she suspected that someone she knew may have planted the camera in the vent.
