BRIEF: World AIDS Day 2014: HIV, AIDS diagnoses, deaths dropping in L.A.

Dec. 01--On World AIDS Day, here's a quick overview of HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County.

According to the county Division of HIV and STD Programs, there were 47,148 people living with HIV in the county as of Dec. 31, 2013. Improved HIV treatment over the years has meant a significant delay in the progression of HIV to Stage 3 HIV -- or AIDS.

Of those living with HIV in the county, 75% were 40 or older, less than 1% were younger than 20, and 13% were over 60.

In California as of Dec. 31, 2013, there were 120,480 people living with HIV.

The chart shows the downward trend in the diagnoses of HIV infection, diagnoses of AIDS and deaths in L.A. County over the years, with the sharpest drop in new HIV diagnoses from 2012 to 2013.
