BRIEF: Worker crushed to death by 40-foot, 8,000-pound pipe in Sonoma County

April 16--A Novato, Calif., man was killed Wednesday when a 40-foot-long, 8,000-pound section of pipe crushed him at a construction site, authorities said.

Jared Overfield, 28, was working for an engineering contractor at a construction project off Highway 101 in Petaluma in Sonoma County, where he was moving the pipe from a forklift, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

Overfield was in front of the forklift when the concrete-reinforced steel pipe suddenly rolled forward and crushed him.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the accident.

The cause of Overfield's death will be determined by the Sonoma County coroner's office.

The State Department of Industrial Relations will determine whether any industry regulations, policies or procedures were violated, sheriff's officials said.
