BRIEF: Worker at Elmhurst senior home stole residents' jewelry, officials charge

Dec. 16--An employee of an Elmhurst senior living facility has been charged with stealing jewelry and other items from at least eight residents, DuPage County prosecutors said Wednesday.

Eugene Dorsey, 29, of the 4900 block of Grace Street in Chicago, was taken into custody Tuesday on eight counts of residential burglary. He was ordered held in lieu of $300,000 bail following a Wednesday morning bond court appearance, prosecutors said.

Police say the thefts took place in November at the Park Place senior living facility.

Prosecutors allege that Dorsey, who worked in the facility's assisted-living area, entered eight residences in the independent-living area and stole rings, necklaces and bracelets. He then pawned the items for cash, prosecutors said.

"The allegations that Mr. Dorsey stole valuables worth thousands of dollars from seniors, all of whom are more than 80 years old, is unconscionable," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "As one of society's most vulnerable populations, our seniors deserve our love and respect. They do not deserve to have their valuables stolen from them and pawned, as is alleged in this case."
