BRIEF: Woman shot while sitting outside East Los Angeles housing project

March 19--Authorities are investigating the shooting of a disabled woman that left her critically injured Saturday morning.

The woman was sitting in her wheelchair outside the Maravilla Housing Project on the corner of Cesar E. Chavez and Mednik avenues when she was shot about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Mario Castro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The unidentified victim was shot once, Castro said. She was transported to a local hospital and was in stable condition, he said.

A male suspect fled the scene and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, Castro said.

It is unknown if the assailant was on foot or in a vehicle, Castro said.
