Woman's hand amputated after crash, prosecutors say

Nov. 17--A Chicago man was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bond Sunday after being charged with leaving the scene of an accident on the Dan Ryan that resulted in a Champaign woman's left hand being amputated.

Arley Romero, 21, was driving at "a high rate of speed" Friday on Interstate 94 near 87th Street when he lost control of his vehicle about 10:20 p.m. and crashed into a vehicle with a 59-year-old woman inside, according to Cook County Assistant's State's Attorney Luz Toledo.

The woman's vehicle flipped over and came to rest on its hood, and two witnesses observed Romero stop his car and run toward the woman's vehicle but then leave the scene once officers arrived, according to Toledo.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where her hand was amputated, Toledo said.

Romero's license plates were noted by officers before he fled, and he was arrested early Saturday at his home, Toledo said.

Toledo said results of a DUI test were not yet available. Romero, of the 3500 block of South Wood Street, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injury, a Class 4 felony.

An earlier version of this story gave an incorrect block address for Romero's residence.
