BRIEF: Woman's body found in former school building in Gary

July 08--Police are investigating the death of a woman found in an abandoned school building in Gary.

The woman was discovered around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday in the former Emerson school after someone called police, according to the Lake County coroner's office. The woman was lying face down and had suffered "minor trauma," the office said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, but the office said the death was being investigated by the Lake County Metro Homicide Unit.

Authorities asked for the public's help in identifying the woman. She was described as black and was wearing a gold necklace with a charm that said, "Coco," the office said.

The woman also had several tattoos: the word "gorgeous" with a bird on her left bicep and a cupcake on her thigh.

Anyone with information was asked to call the homicide unit at 219-755-3851.
