BRIEF: Woman killed in crash on 55 Freeway in Santa Ana

Feb. 14--A motorist was killed late Friday night after her vehicle hit a mattress lying in the northbound lanes of the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Cynthia Brock, 53, of Costa Mesa, died after her car struck the mattress in the far left lane of the freeway south of Dyer Road and careened into the center divider at about 11:40 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and Orange County coroner.

The vehicle came to rest sideways on the freeway and was struck by a van, which triggered collisions with two other vehicles, authorities said. The driver of the van then fled the scene on foot and was later arrested at his home on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Brock was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the CHP.
