BRIEF: Woman dies after falling off stairwell at UIC building

May 08--A 20-year-old woman died early Friday after falling off of a public stairwell connected to a University of Illinois at Chicago building, authorities said.

Just after 4 a.m. Friday, crews responded to the UIC building at 1007 W. Harrison St. for reports of a woman who fell, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The woman was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:38 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A spokeswoman for UIC said the woman was not affiliated with the university. The woman was inside an open-air stairwell connected to the building that is open to the public, the spokeswoman said. The stairwell leads to an outdoor green space on the UIC building.

Authorities were conducting a death investigation.
