BRIEF: Woman dead, man injured in car crash on South Side

July 17--A woman was killed and a man critically injured in a single-car crash Friday in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

A red 1999 Dodge crashed into a fire hydrant at a high rate of speed around 2:25 a.m. in the 5500 block of South LaSalle Street, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

First responders extricated a 25-year-old man, who was the driver of the car, and took him to Stroger Hospital. He was listed in critical condition as of early Friday, Gaines said.

A 37-year-old female passenger was also extricated and taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The Major Accident Investigation Unit is still investigating, and no other information was immediately available.
