Woman dead, 2 others injured in Pilsen hit-and-run crash

Feb. 22--A woman died and a 5-year-old boy and a man were critically injured after a hit-and-run car crash early Sunday in the Pilsen neighborhood.

Shortly after midnight, a Ford Mustang was speeding south on Loomis Street in the 2400 block when it collided with a Honda Civic, which was going north on Loomis, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

After the head-on collision, the Mustang also struck two nearby parked cars before coming to a stop, Alfaro said.

A 23-year-old woman, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the Civic, had to be extricated from the car, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez. She was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, Alfaro said. She was pronounced dead at 12:50 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The woman was later identified as Elizabeth Salinas, of the 4800 block of South Laflin Street, according to the medical examiner's office.

The Civic's 18-year-old driver and a 5-year-old boy inside the car were both taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police and Hernandez said.

The driver of the Mustang fled after the head-on collision, and no one was in custody early Sunday, police said.

The Police Department's major accidents unit was investigating the crash.
