BRIEF: Woman, 87, among 2 hurt in Lawndale fire

Jan. 15--An 87-year-old woman and another adult were hurt in a fire that broke out early Friday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

The fire started in a two-story home in the 1200 block of South Avers Avenue around 3:30 a.m., said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder.

Firefighters helped the 87-year-old woman and other adult, whose age and gender were not immediately available, get out of the basement, according to Schroeder and Officer Ron Gaines, a police spokesman.

Both victims suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Schroeder said. One was listed in critical condition, and the other one was in good condition, he said.

Six people were displaced by the fire, Gaines said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
