Young mother killed, boyfriend hurt after shots fired into car in Dolton

Jan. 08--A 19-year-old mother from Riverdale was killed and her boyfriend was injured when shots were fired into a parked car in the driveway of a house in Dolton Thursday night, police and family members said.

DeArrea Haymond was in the car with her 25-year-old boyfriend about 7:30 p.m. in front of the home in which he lived on 153rd Street near Irving Avenue in the south suburb, police said.

Police said someone fired several shots at point-blank range into both the driver and passenger sides of the car before fleeing. About two dozen gunshell casings were found at the scene.

Haymond died. Her boyfriend was able to crawl to the house and had his mother contact an ambulance, which transported him to Stroger Hospital in Chicago. Officials said he is expected to recover from his wounds.

Dolton officials had no one in custody as of early Friday afternoon. They would not speculate about a motive.

Haymond's mother, Dalena Grant, said she did not know of anyone who would want to hurt her daughter.

"She was a loving person who wouldn't hurt anybody," Grant said. "She worked hard to take care of her daughter," a 2-year-old girl.

Grant also said her daughter was attending classes to prepare herself to earn a General Equivalency Degree.

Grant said her daughter lived with her in Riverdale. She said her boyfriend was not the father of the baby girl.
