April 15--At least 20,000 customers were without power Friday after heavy winds caused outages in several neighborhoods across the city, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said.
As of 11:30 a.m., crews were working at 290 active outages affecting 23,000 customers, up from 16,300 customers reported earlier Friday morning. Crews "continue to work under dangerous windy conditions," officials said.
"The wind storms typically result in power outages as dried palm fronds, tree branches, downed trees and other debris fall and make contact with power lines," DWP said in a statement.
Crews are working "as diligently and as safely as possible under these heavy wind conditions" to restore power to affected customers. Communities with the highest number of impacted customers include East Hollywood (2,021), Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw (1,916), Northridge (2,773) and Faircrest Heights (1,978).
