BRIEF: Wind pushes Laguna Canyon fire away from homes

July 04--More than 100 firefighters were struggling Friday afternoon to contain a brush fire that has charred 10 acres in Laguna Canyon and briefly forced the shutdown of State Route 73, authorities said.

"The fire started in the 1900 block of Laguna Canyon Road" about 3 p.m., said Tony Bommarito, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority. "It has the potential to burn 20 to 25 acres. The wind is pushing it away from a tract of homes in the area."

Firefighters were operating under a unified command between the Orange County Fire Authority and the Laguna Beach Fire Department, Bommarito said. The effort included two airplanes and two helicopters.

The fire prompted the temporary closure of State Route 73. But the highway has reopened in both directions.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
