BRIEF: Wimbledon 1997 singles champ Martina Hingis takes two more titles

July 13--REPORTING FROM LONDON -- After 18 years, Martina Hingis was back with a bang at Wimbledon.

The 1997 Wimbledon singles champion from Switzerland is 34 now, and she won two titles here over the weekend.

Saturday, she teamed with India's Sania Mirza to win the women's doubles over Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-5.

Sunday, she teamed with India's Leander Paes to win the mixed doubles over the Hungarian team of Alexander Peya and Timea Babos, 6-1, 6-1.

"Last night and today, just amazing," Hingis said.

Etc.

Total attendance at Wimbledon for the two weeks was 484,391. In comparison, the big Southern California tournament at Indian Wells, the BNP Paribas Open, which has one more day of competition -- no middle Sunday off like at Wimbledon -- drew 456,672 last March.
