Nov. 10--The Northwestern women's field hockey team completed a string of upsets to earn their first Big Ten tournament title and a place in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994.
The third-seeded Wildcats (16-6) beat top seed Maryland 3-1 in Sunday's final in Ann Arbor after knocking off No. 2 seed Michigan 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals.
The Wildcats open NCAA play Saturday against Duke at Chapel Hill, N.C. A win would move Northwestern to a Sunday game, likely at top-seeded North Carolina.
Sunday's three Northwestern goals came from an Irish junior (Lisa McCarthy, Dublin), a Dutch sophomore (Isabel Fiens, Haarlem) and an English sophomore (Dominique Masters, Canterbury.)
Masters leads the team in scoring with 15 goals and eight assists.
