BRIEF: White Sox reportedly discussing trade for A's infielder Brett Lawrie

Dec. 09--The White Sox have discussed trading for Athletics infielder Brett Lawrie this week at the winter meetings, and one report indicated that they could be nearing a deal that would bring the 25-year-old third baseman to Chicago.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported late Tuesday night that the Sox and A's were in serious talks about a trade that would send two Sox minor leaguers to the A's, but the teams were undecided about those names.

Lawrie, a five-year major league veteran, is a career .263 hitter with a .736 OPS. He hit 16 homers and had 60 RBIs for the A's in 2015 while playing 109 games at third base and 42 at second.

The Sox have made it known that they are exploring all avenues to fill their opening at third base, a position of weakness over the last few years.

"It's obviously a position of need, and any freely available talent that could potentially help us, we have checked it," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said this week.

The Sox and A's pulled off a six-player trade at the last winter meetings that brought right-hander Jeff Samardzija to the South Side.
