BRIEF: White Sox release former 1st-round pick Jared Mitchell, sign Tyler Colvin

May 03--MINNEAPOLIS -- The White Sox released former first-round draft pick Jared Mitchell on Sunday after years of trying to push the athletic outfielder to meet what they thought was big potential.

The Sox signed outfielder Tyler Colvin, a former Cubs first-round pick, and gave him Mitchell's roster spot in Triple-A Charlotte.

It never fully clicked for the Sox and Mitchell, the 23rd overall pick in 2009, who exits the Sox organization with a .226 career batting average in the minors.

Mitchell, 26, never appeared in a game for the Sox and was 2-for-40 in 13 games this season with Charlotte, where he had played for parts of four seasons. He was a highly touted prospect as a former LSU football and baseball player, but he was derailed by a major ankle injury in the spring of 2010 and never consistently met expectations after that.

Colvin, 29, was the 13th overall pick in the 2006 draft. He has played in 441 career major-league games with the Cubs, Rockies and Giants over six seasons, posting a career .239 batting average with 49 homers and 178 RBIs.
