Dec. 09--SAN DIEGO -- The Chicago White Sox claimed catcher Rob Brantly off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Monday, the opening day of the winter meetings.
The move gave the Sox five catchers on their 40-man roster. Sox general manager Rick Hahn said he expects in the coming weeks that the Sox will address the excess, which includes current starter Tyler Flowers, 2014 backup Adrian Nieto and minor leaguers Josh Phegley and Kevan Smith.
Brantly, a 25-year-old left-handed hitter, batted .255 with four home runs and 37 RBIs in 101 games with the Marlins' Triple-A club in 2014. He played in 98 games with the Marlins from 2012-13, hitting .235 with four homers and 26 RBIs.
He was a third-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2010.
"We like that Brantly is left-handed, is still young," Hahn said. "His receiving skills started solid, regressed a little bit and actually improved in recent months, according to our reports. ... He's an interesting guy. We like having that balance and depth at that position."
The Sox 40-man roster moved to 40 with the claim.
