July 02--The White Sox have added two top-30 international prospects on the first day of the international signing period, the team announced Thursday.
Outfielder Franklin Reyes, a 16-year-old right-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic, received the biggest payday, signing for a $1.5 million bonus, according to MLB.com. He is ranked No. 30 among international prospects by MLB.com and is known for his raw power.
The Sox also signed shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., ranked No. 27 by MLB.com. Tatis, a 16-year-old right-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic, is the son of former major-league infielder/outfielder Fernando Tatis, who played for five teams over 11 seasons.
Switch-hitting infielder Brayant Nova and shortstop Santo Vasquez rounded out the first day of signing.
Sox general manager Rick Hahn attended the signing ceremony in Santo Domingo along with Marco Paddy, the Sox's special assistant to the GM for international operations.
"Thanks to Marco Paddy and the efforts of our international scouting staff across Latin America, we continue to add waves of very talented young players to our system," Hahn said in a release. "All of this success will ultimately pay off in Chicago in seasons to come."
