Dec. 08--All westbound lanes of the Borman Expressway were shut down near Gary in northwest Indiana after a semi-truck crashed and caught on fire early Tuesday morning.
A 2006 Volvo semi truck that was pulling a box trailer was traveling westbound on Interstate 80/94 when for unknown reasons the semi went off the roadway near Grant Street, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.
The semi-truck hit a crash cushion and a cement pillar on the right side of the road, went airborne and came to a rest across the road, blocking four lanes of traffic. The semi then caught fire under the Chase Street overpass, according to the release.
A 30-year-old man driving the truck was able to escape uninjured before the truck became fully engulfed in fire.
As of 6:30 a.m., westbound traffic on Interstate 80/94 was still blocked, and cars were being diverted onto Broadway, according to state police.
The Chase Street overpass was also closed while officials investigated its safety after it sustained damage from the fire.
State police encourage commuters to use alternative routes and expect delays in the area Tuesday morning.
