BRIEF: West Side standoff ends peacefully

July 02--An armed man who was holed up inside a West Side buildling surrendered to police and was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.

The man was in custody as of 3:50 p.m., according to police.

Officers responded to a call of a man with a gun at a home in the 2100 block of West 21st Street about 11:22 a.m., said Officer Ana Pacheco, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

"It turned into an HBT incident," Pacheco said, using a term short for hostage/barricaded/terrorist.

SWAT members arrived at the West 21st Street address about 12:30 p.m., police said.

Thomas Hodge, a 26-year-old line cook who lives on the fourth floor of the building where the standoff happened, said he was coming home from work when he saw all the police cars.

"I got off the train and there was a barricade two blocks east and two blocks west,'' said Hodge. "There was no way to get close to the building.''

Rosalina Guzman, 47, lives on the fourth floor of a building next door.

"I was walking downstairs and I heard just heard pop-pop-pop and I ran for my life,'' said Guzman. "I ran all the way down to the first floor.''
