BRIEF: West Side man charged with promoting prostitution at Schiller Park hotel

Feb. 22--A 29-year-old West Side man was charged after an undercover sting revealed he was the pimp for a woman working out of a northwest suburban Schiller Park hotel room, Cook County officials said.

Jamal Shells, of the 2700 block of West Washington Boulevard in the West Town neighborhood, was charged with promoting prostitution and domestic battery, according to a news release from the Cook County sheriff's office. Shells was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail in a hearing Sunday in before Judge Peggy Chiampas in Cook County Central Bond Court.

Earlier vice unit investigators responded to an advertisement in the escort section of Backpage.com. Someone told the investigator to meet them at a hotel room in Schiller Park. At the room, a 20-year-old woman agreed to sex and was arrested, the release said.

Authorities later learned Shells had rented the room for the woman for prostitution and received profits from it. Officials said he also had beaten the woman earlier that day, the release said.

Shells was arrested at a sandwich shop in the 4000 block of Mannheim Road in Franklin Park. Shells was scheduled to return to court Tuesday.

Tribune reporter Tony Briscoe contributed.
